Work shorts are the plainer build: duck canvas, deep pockets, reinforced seams. Carpenter shorts add the hammer loop and ruler pocket. Both are cut long and roomy, which is exactly why they work now — the proportions match current taste without alteration.

Some of the best pairs started as full-length carpenter or double knee pants and were cut down. A raw hem frays about a centimetre then holds; a clean hem is double-stitched. Neither affects durability — the canvas is the same weight either way.

Khaki and faded khaki are the most versatile and most common. Carhartt brown, moss green and charcoal are steadier sellers. Paint-splattered pairs and heavily distressed examples carry a premium because the wear cannot be faked.
